The Heart Gate was designed by Philip Simmons and executed by his apprentices in 1991. The gate marks the entrance to Philip Simmons Park located at St John’s Reformed Episcopal Church, 91 Anson St, which was dedicated in Simmons’ honor during the same year. Philip Simmons (1912-2009) was a Charleston blacksmith and artisan who’s career spanned over 77 years. He focused primarily on decorative ironwork including gates that can be seen throughout Charleston and South Carolina. During his career as one of the world’s most renowned Master Blacksmiths, Simmons designed, fabricated, or repaired over 600 pieces of ironworks and samples of his works are on display in the Smithsonian Museum and South Carolina State Museum. Simmons was a member of St John’s Reformed Episcopal Church and the design of this gate reflects his belief that church is where the heart is.
