332 East Bay St Gate Print

Robert Primerose, a Charleston auctioneer, built this two-story brick house c. 1817 with a high basement on the former site of the Christopher Gadsen residence. Gadsen was a soldier, statesman, and principal leader of the South Carolina Patriot movement in the American Revolution. While the house retains largely its Federal style elements, the piazza and elliptical front portico are Greek Revival additions along with the French doors on all levels of the piazza side. The brick gates with brownstone caps were added in the mid 1800s along with marble steps and cast-iron gas lamps atop the stair newels. Today the house serves as a professional office building while retaining its prominent yellow exterior accents.
