Palm & Pineapple Notecards

The Palmetto tree thrives along the South Carolina coast due to its tolerance to salt spray and cold and became the state tree after the Battle of Fort Moultrie in 1776. Earlier that year, a crude palmetto log fort on Sullivan’s Island as a first line of defense for Charleston and successfully withstood a sustained attack by the British.
Seafaring captains from east coast ports including Charleston, would impale fresh pineapples – souvenirs of their lengthy travels to tropical ports – atop the porch railings of their homes when they returned. It was a symbol then that the man of the house was home and became a symbol of Southern hospitality still visible to this day.
