The Country Bunny and the Little Gold Shoes was first published in April 1939 after a friend of the Heyward family, Marjorie Flack, convinced De Bose to write down the story of the Easter Bunny he had been telling his daughter, Jenifer, night after night. Flack, best known for the classic children's book The Story of Ping, filled the pages of Heyward's story with charming and vivid illustrations of bunnies both darling and dignified, painted in the prettiest of pastels, capturing the spirit of Easter in the colors of dip-dyed eggs. These pictures were coupled with the sweet story of little Cottontail, the country bunny with twenty-one babies, and the result was an utterly enchanting and treasured children's book that is enjoyed by readers of all ages year after year. This book has never been out of print.
