Marion Rivers Ravenel L. Mendal Rivers was a native South Carolinian who rose from a humble, rural background to become one of the most influential and controversial members of the U.S. House of Representatives, and elective position which he held for thirty years. Along the way, he overcame personal inhibitions, pistol-toting political opponents and the continuing harassment of nationally syndicated columnist Drew Pearson to preside as Chairman of the powerful House Armed Services Committee and to earn his reputation as "the soldiers' friend." This intimate biography, written by his daughter, reveals the human side of the public persona and presents a complex man who battled his own personal devils to achieve an enviable record of accomplishment in Washington while managing to "deliver" for his beloved constituents back home.

Marion Rivers Ravenel was born in Washington, D.C., during her father's second term in Congress. She attended schools in Virginia and South Carolina, and was graduated from Converse College in Spartanburg, S.C. in 1965 with a degree in history and political science. She resides in Charleston.
