Rainbow Row, the row of pastel-colored historic houses on East Bay Street in Charleston, is one of the city's iconic and most photographed attractions.  But these buildings have not always been so brightly painted.  First constructed in the mid-1700s, they were designed with storefronts on the bottom floor and living quarters on the upper floors for the merchants and their families.  After the Civil War, the area fell into disrepair. Then in 1931, Dorothy Porcher Legge and her husband, Judge Lionel Legge, purchased a section of the houses.  It was her idea to paint them a shade of pastel pink.  Other residents soon followed with other colors until it became the icon that today is an unmistakable part of Charleston history.

Finished size 5.5" by 3.5" on 18 count Charles Craft fabric.
